Our Story

Somewhere along the way, we realized that life wasn’t meant to be measured only in years, but in the moments we fill them with.
For our family, that realization became especially meaningful after a leukemia diagnosis reminded us just how precious time really is. We began looking at life differently, choosing to make more memories, embrace new experiences, and stop putting off the adventures we’d always dreamed about.
And so, we started exploring.
We’re a Texas family of eleven, with nine children brought into our lives through birth, fostering, and adoption. Our family is wonderfully diverse in personalities, interests, and opinions, especially when it comes to choosing between the mountains and the beach. It’s an ongoing debate, and we’re not expecting a unanimous decision anytime soon.
Our adventures have taken us across the country in our RV, through national parks with passport books in hand, and to destinations beyond the open road. From mountain trails and desert sunsets to ocean breezes and unforgettable experiences, we’ve discovered that some of life’s best stories begin when we venture beyond the familiar.
How The Soaring Compass Began
The name The Soaring Compass actually began with two unlikely inspirations: a love of owls and a fascination with antique compasses.
Those two passions sparked an idea for a children’s adventure book, and before long, The Soaring Compass became something much bigger than a story on a page.
It became a reflection of the way we wanted to live.
Today, The Soaring Compass brings together our love of travel, exploration, writing, and storytelling. Through destination guides, firsthand experiences, original fiction, poetry, and personal reflections, we hope to inspire others to discover more of the world around them and find meaning in the moments along the way.
We believe adventure doesn’t always require a plane ticket or a passport. Sometimes it’s a winding trail, a quiet sunrise, a new chapter in a book, or an ordinary afternoon that becomes an extraordinary memory.
